Quietly living at the dawn of the 21st century, you dream of writing the book that could change your life - and maybe the world - but the Kingdom of Publishing is a distant planet inhabited by agents and editors whose habits are strange and unpredictable. And there's a new star on the horizon called "Self-Publish" that glows with an eerie, inviting light. Which way to go - self-publish or mainstream? Either way, it feels like blasting off for Pluto without a map.
I'm Jean-Noel Bassior - mild-mannered journalist specializing in celebrity interviews, and author of Space Patrol: Missions of Daring in the Name of Early Television - and this site is here to answer some basic questions and speed you on your way. If you're stuck at any point in your journey, it may be because you need more information about how publishing works, how it's changing, and which option - self-publishing or mainstream - is best for you. Or maybe you want to know how to organize tons of research or create time to write. Just click on a question for a short video answer that will help you move toward your goal.
Why does this site have a superhero theme? Because writing a book can be a heroic journey: You wonder if you have the time, resources and stamina to complete it; you swing between doubt and faith that it will get done. I grew up with TV heroes (created by pretty cool writers) who saw life as an adventure and took risks rather than playing it safe. I like that approach. Writing a book or a book proposal can challenge you in much the same way.
Enjoy the site, enjoy the journey, and if you need help, feel free to call.
Spaceman's luck,
Jean-Noel Bassior
